In this case we had to splice 2 sections of beam over a center post with a seam. Because these connectors are not particularly attractive you will probably want to conceal them behind fascia or on the interior side of the beam. You can also use hardware applications like strap ties or nailing plates to further secure the connection. For instance you could use 2-2x10x10’s and 2-2x10x20’s to form a 30’ beam with one seam set above two intermediate posts. Plan ahead and layout the beam on the ground over the footings before installation. Overlapping seams integrates strength and prevents fracturing along seams throughout the length of the beam. Always split a beam over a post. It is best to have one continuous board over a post allowing one joint to fall on top of the post. In order to do this you should overlap the individual parts of the beam so they are staggered if possible. However, if your span is greater than 20’ (like the image below) you will likely need to splice some boards to form a beam. Dimensional lumber is readily available in lengths up to 20’ which should accommodate a seamless beam for most applications. Finally, use a handsaw or circular saw to cut along the plumb cut, birdsmouth, and tail cut lines. It is always best to use a continuous beam without seams for higher strength. ![]() Then, trace the short side of the framing square with a pencil to mark the tail cut. After you’ve done that, rotate your framing square 180 degrees so that the 8-inch mark on the long side of the framing square intersects the line for the tail cut. Make sure the other stair gauge is resting against the rafter and use your pencil to trace the length of the tongue. Then, reposition your framing square so that the stair gauge of the tongue is on the pencil mark you made to indicate the full diagonal length of the rafter. Once you’ve marked the lines, use your pencil to draw the diagonal length on the rafter. TJI joists are lightweight and come in long lengths, which makes them faster and easier to install than traditional framing, and saves you both. Fasteners must be installed correctly to achieve published loads. ![]() The dimensional stability of TJI joists help them resist warping, twisting and shrinking that can lead to squeaky floors. Simpson Strong-Tie connectors have been designed and tested for use with specific types and sizes of fasteners. Next, set the framing square on top of the rafter beam and use a pencil to trace the outside edge of the framing square’s tongue. Trus Joist TJI joists are a key part of making a high-performance floor. To cut roof rafters, start by fixing the stair gauges on your framing square to the dimensions of your pitch. The calculator (or math equation, if you’re writing it out longhand) will only calculate the diagonal measurement to the edge of the building. Not sure if these issues were from construction, damaged over time, or possibly a defective design, with the exception of the bowed trusses, all the problems viewed were at the splice in the upper chords. The TP features a nail-on design for quick and easy installation. This versatile and easy-to-use tie plate is ideal for splicing and for reinforcing all types of wood-to-wood connections.
